Michael J. Burry è noto soprattutto per aver anticipato la crisi dei mutui del 2007 e per aver ispirato il film “The Big Short”. Nel mezzo del panico del COVID-19, questo genio finanziario (che di solito apprezza la sua privacy) ha creato un account Twitter per comunicare un singolo messaggio: porre fine al lockdown.
Il film The Big Short è stato ispirato dalla vera storia di Michael J. Burry, lo strano e leggermente autistico gestore di hedge fund che ha previsto il crollo del mercato delle obbligazioni ipotecarie nel 2007 (il suo ruolo è stato interpretato da Christian Bale). In effetti, dopo aver elaborato migliaia di pagine di dati nel suo potente cervello simile a un computer, Burry ha predetto l’incidente ipotecario mesi prima che accadesse. Ha anche guadagnato un sacco di soldi dalla situazione scommettendo contro il mercato immobiliare – una mossa mai vista prima. Il risultato netto: ha guadagnato $ 100 milioni per se stesso e $ 700 milioni per i suoi investitori.
Da allora, Burry si è concentrato sugli investimenti privati (principalmente acqua, che considera la merce del futuro) ed è rimasto costantemente lontano dai riflettori. Tuttavia, l’enorme panico e il blocco causato dal COVID-19 sembrano aver innescato un messaggio di errore nel suo potente cervello. E quel messaggio di errore e` stato così persistente che lo ha costretto a fare l’impensabile: ha creato un account Twitter. Il suo obiettivo: affrontare la risposta del governo senza precedenti a questa pandemia.
Burry non sta dicendo che le persone dovrebbero immediatamente tornare al bar e a leccarsi a vicenda. Chiede un approccio misurato, che permetta alle persone sane di vivere normalmente e di andare al lavoro proteggendo coloro che sono a rischio. In breve, ritiene che l’attuale rimedio potrebbe essere peggiore della malattia. In un’intervista a BNN Bloomberg, Burry ha dichiarato:
“Sono diventato attivo su Twitter nell’ultima settimana per la prima volta in assoluto. Avevo molto da dire e mi sono tolto un peso. Mi sono iscritto a Twitter perché ero profondamente rattristato da una chiusura nazionale che sta devastando il sostentamento degli americani in molti modi. Ho visto che la narrativa principale ignora completamente le masse che non sono a rischio letale da COVID-19.
Le politiche di lockdown non devono essere universali. COVID-19 è una malattia in qualche modo letale per gli obesi, i molto vecchi, i già malati. Le politiche pubbliche non hanno sfumature perché vogliono massimizzare la paura e far rispettare la conformità. Tuttavia questo lockdown devasta le piccole e medie imprese e indirettamente aumenta i casi in cui donne e bambini vengono picchiati, uccisi, crea tossicodipendenti, provoca suicidi e in generale genera un’enorme sofferenza e angoscia mentale. Questi effetti secondari e terziari non vengono per nulla considerati.
Le politiche di lockdown sono valide solo quando c’e` carenza di attrezzature e medicine in corrispondenza o quasi del picco della malattia. Ma ciò potrebbe essere realizzato coinvolgendo un gruppo di persone molto più mirato.
Nel frattempo, rimanere a casa riduce e rallenta lo sviluppo dell’immunità di gregge nei confronti del COVID. L’immunità di gregge è un passo fondamentale per lasciarci alle spalle questo brutto periodo.
Tengo molto alla mia privacy, ma quello che sta succedendo in questo paese e nel mondo e` diventato di primaria importanza. Alla fine, Twitter è un’attività senza rischi. Sono stato su Twitter solo per una settimana circa, ma immagino che cercherò solo di concentrarmi e di non muovere troppo le acque. “
Per molti aspetti, Michael Burry è l’anti-Bill Gates. Mentre Gates ha recentemente chiesto un incredibile blocco nazionale di 10 settimane (e microchippare coloro che ricevono il vaccino), Burry chiede una rapida conclusione del blocco e l’introduzione di un approccio più mirato. Nell’attuale clima di paura e panico generato dai media, Michael Burry porta il suo marchio di pensiero analitico basato sui fatti. Mentre la maggior parte degli esperti dei media (ad esempio Bill Gates) è supportato da potenti organizzazioni con programmi nascosti, Burry è fondamentalmente un singolo che sembra essere sinceramente preoccupato per il benessere dei suoi concittadini. Come dice Burry, ora è il momento dei fatti, non della paura.
Anche se uno potrebbe non essere d’accordo con le sue opinioni, la sua voce deve essere ascoltata. Dobbiamo avere un dibattito razionale sulla risposta corretta a questa situazione.
